The high sugar content reinforces the digestive system. Therefore, it is believed that eating roasted chestnuts will cure an upset stomach or diarrhea. Raw chestnuts are perfect as a side dish with alcohol, for the vitamin C dissolves alcohol and stimulates the metabolism that naturally helps in relieving hangovers.
"Tong Ui Bo Kam" (the later edition) explains, "chestnuts help Ki (an energy source), reinforce the stomach and bowel, invigorate virility, and fill the stomach". Normally, the chestnut is picked and dried in lunar September, but if it is to be preserved raw, it should be protected from humidity. If buried in sand, it will maintain its freshness for over a year.
Chestnuts are used for preventing geriatric disease, helping recovery from maladies, and fortifying the digestive system. They also work well as baby food and as material for food processing. Today, their high nutritious value is being scientifically studied. They have become an internationally recognized nourishing food that we can't do without. |
